Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust is one of eight community
groups which will receive a Christmas boost from South Staffs Water for projects
to encourage and enhance biodiversity.
Over £22,000 in total, will be awarded to the eight projects, which cover almost
three hectares (equivalent to three rugby pitches) and focus on community
allotments and gardening projects, hedge planting and apiary training.
Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust will use the funding of £2300 to
plant new hedging along the line of the Lichfield Canal at Falkland Road, providing
new wildlife habitats and further improving the area for the community. The work
is due to start early next year, before the next section of the canal is excavated.

Water, said:
“We’re not just here to provide our customers with high quality water, we want to
protect and enhance the environment for current communities and for future
generations. We want to do that by supporting and funding the existing
community groups and charities, which are already working hard to increase the
variety of natural living things and the diversity of the habitats where they live.
"This is work which not only benefits wildlife, but also enhances local
communities and our open spaces. We were pleased to receive so many
applications for our PEBBLE fund this year, the successful projects were chosen
by a combination of our staff volunteers across the business and customers on
our online community. I’m looking forward to seeing how these projects
progress.”
On Saturday, 12 December 2020, several members of Lichfield Soroptimists
collected about 40 saplings and young trees from LHCRT. They will tend them
for us over the winter in their gardens.
Lichfield Soroptimists had been all set to help us both on the ground and also
with survey work throughout 2020, but COVID has put a temporary stop on that.
So, both LHCRT and Lichfield Soroptimists look forward to resuming more
fruitful partnering in 2021.
In the meantime, we know that our young trees, so important for improving
biodiversity and thus wildlife, are being well cared for. Thank you, Lichfield Soroptimists.
